The Arts and the Unemployed

By DaRabbit, Student

The arts as an opportunity for the unemployed

An essay hosted at LiteratureClassics.com

Young unemployed people today should see unemployment as an opportunity to live frugally on State benefits and spend their time and money in more useful pursuits such as developing their minds, their spiritual being and an appreciation of the arts. But why?

The arts such as reading, painting and music are an integral part in any society. They form the basis of cultural development and sanity, as people have something to nurture and understand. If the young unemployed people of today spent their time and dole money on developing an appreciation of their minds and the works of the minds of others, then they would be able to better serve the workforce of Australia. The arts can help a person better serve their lives in a way that suits society, and there are many fields of the arts people can take an interest in.

Sports fans, readers, artists, musicians; all have a place in a normally functioning society. If there are too little of these sane and quite frankly intelligent people in a society, anarchy may start to rule. The ancient Greeks knew of the importance of the arts: they had debates every day, and drama festivals four times a year! And look how they prospered!

If an unemployed person spent some of their time developing an understanding and fondness of the arts, then they would be better off when they started to look for a job in the future. The arts help a person expand their capabilities in all fields, not just the one they participate in.

Psychologically the arts can help a person. Anger management and depression can be made a lot easier with the use of art or dance, and the listening of classical music can help a person concentrate or relax. Physically can assist a person as well. Dance, sports and other areas of these useful pursuits can be used to aid bodily development, or just as a social thing to do.

Which leads me to my next topic, the social benefits of the arts. Being a in a club that deals with the arts is an idea that leads to a drop in crime and a rise in social intelligence. Who would rather a person in drug dealing, granny-bashing street gangs than a nice sedate book club, where they are increasing their intelligence and promoting good ideals to the local youth?
Unemployment is a gift to the youth of today. It gives them an opportunity they may not have in the workforce, and allows them to spend their time and money in more useful pursuits such as developing their minds, their spiritual being and an appreciation of the arts. All of these things, as shown above, can greatly help the development of an individual and a society, and the idea of unemployment as an opportunity to live frugally on State benefits is an opening that should not be wasted.
